  2. Jackalyn Rainosek : Evolution of a Career Helping Others Jackalyn Rainosek began her career as a therapist working with cancer patients using the Simonton Method. The Simonton Method of counseling for cancer patients was developed in 1973 by oncologist Dr. Carl Simonton and his wife, Stephanie Matthews-Simonton. The method approached cancer treatment in a holistic way, drawing on the concept that treatment of both the mind and body was the best approach in improving both quality of life and survival rates for those with cancer.

  3. Dr. Simonton developed the counseling program based on the belief that mind-body health practices such as meditation, relaxation exercises, guided imagery and yoga could be used to help alleviate pain, anxiety and stress. The Simonton Method also draws on the belief that attitudes, lifestyle and emotions have an effect on physical illness. This type of alternative approach also promotes the idea that a change in one area of the body can effect positive change throughout the body. In 1978, Simonton published the book, Getting Well Again, which outlined his mind-body approach to healing for cancer patients. In 1984, the Simonton Cancer Counseling Center was founded in Pacific Palisades, CA and it still operates today despite Simonton’s death in 2009. The Simonton Method of counseling continues to be used worldwide, with thousands of counselors trained in the techniques.
