When a legal adoption occurs, the adoptive parents will receive the same rights and obligations as biological parents. 3. In Virginia, the law only allows for two types of adoption placements: 01 Adoptions made by duly authorized agencies 02 Those made by birth parents or legal guardians

  4. Adoption Placement AGENCIES Agency placement adoptions in Virginia occur when a child is in the custody of a social services department or a private agency licensed to conducted options. In these situations, all parental rights of the biological parents are terminated, and custody is granted to the agency so they can facilitate the adoption.

  5. Non-agency ADOPTIONS Non-agency placements occur when a child is not in the custody of an agency. In these cases, the birth parents or legal guardians will be the ones who consent to the adoption, and their parental rights will be terminated once the final adoption order is issued.

  6. There are three types of non-agency adoptions in Virginia: Parental placement adoptions Stepparent adoptions Adult adoptions
