WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW 01 02 BIOLOGICAL PHYSIOLOGICAL 03 SOCIOCULTURAL Human sexuality involves at least three (3) dimensions
BIOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS • The biological dimension of human sexuality involves the physical appearance, especially the development of physical sexual characteristics, responses to sexual stimulation, ability to reproduce or to control fertility, and growth and development. • The biological aspect relates to the other dimensions of sexuality, and all the dimensions work together to produce an individual’s total sexuality - which, in turn, is a part of the total personality (Bruess & Schroeder, 2014)
PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS • A major psychological factor that affects one’s sexual wellness is body image. A positive body image lends itself to a feeling of overall wellness, while a negative self-image can lead to drug abuse or psychological disorders like anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or muscle dysmorphia. • One’s attitudes and feelings toward oneself and other people begin to develop very early in life.
SOCIOCULTURAL DIMENSIONS • The sociocultural dimension of sexuality is the sum of the cultural and social influences that affect thoughts and actions. • Religious Influences - these religious and spiritual beliefs influence feelings about morality, sexual behaviors, premarital sexual behavior, adultery, divorce, contraception, abortion, and masturbation.
2. Multicultural Influences - Culture influences one’s sexuality and sexual expressions. Human sexuality across a diversity of cultural and social settings include s beliefs regarding appropriate partner or partners, appropriate age of marriage, appropriate sexual behaviors, family and household systems, differences in values and expectations, development of sexual expression across the human life span in multi-cultures, and approaches to understanding sexual relationships and sexual violence.
3. Ethical Influences - Ethics and religion often provide the framework within which people judge the rightness or wrongness of sexual activity and expressions. They influence the way individuals of the society regard sexuality, and are therefore powerful in influencing behavior.
