Chess pieces are the assigned points or values to help you determine which side has material advantage. Pawns are valued at 1 point, knights and bishops at 3 points, rooks at 5 points, and the queen at 9 points. The king, although essentially the most important piece, isn’t given value because it cannot be captured. It can only be check mated. This is good to know when analyzing which pieces to sacrifice/keep.  Learning good opening strategies is also critical to gaining advantage at the start of the game. Good opening strategies have three main goals, which are to develop pieces, take control of the center, and protect the king.
