  2. SOURCES OFDRUGS Drugs are obtained from six majorsources: Plantsources Syntheticsources Animalsources Microbiological sources Mineral/Earthsources Recombinant DNAtechnology IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  3. Plant Sources • Plant source is the oldest source of drugs. • Most of the drugs in ancient times were derived fromplants. • Almost all parts of the plants are used • i.e. leaves, stem, bark, fruits and roots. IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  11. Animalsources • Byproducts of animals, including humans, are a source fordrugs • Replacementtherapy IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  12. Hormonal Replacement IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  13. Animalsource IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  14. MineralSources • Minerals are inorganic crystal substances that are found naturally on earth (or in thesoil). • Patients lacking an adequate level of these materials may take specific mineral based drugs to raise the level ofminerals. IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  15. MiscellaneousSources: IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  16. Metallic and Non-metallicsources: IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  17. SyntheticSources • A synthetic drug is produced using chemical synthesis, which rearranges chemical derivatives to form a newcompound. IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  18. SyntheticSources: IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  19. MicrobiologicalSources • Antibiotics are the chemical substances produces by a microorganism, which on high dilution can inhibit the growth and/or multiplication, or kill anothermicroorganism. Antibiotics IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  20. MicrobiologicalSources IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  21. Recombinant DNAtechnology • Recombinant DNA technology involves cleavage of DNA by enzyme restrictionendonucleases. • The desired gene is coupled to rapidly replicating DNA (viral, bacterial or plasmid). • The new genetic combination is inserted into the bacterial cultures which allow production of large amount of geneticmaterial. IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  22. Recombinant DNAtechnology • Forexample- • humaninsulin, • tissue plasminogenactivator, • hematopoietic growth factors likeerythropoietin • Advantages • Huge amounts of drugs can beproduced. • Drug can be obtained in pureform. • It is lessantigenic. IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

  23. Assignment Enlist sources ofdrugs. Name any five plant sources ofdrugs Name any five mineral drugs with therapeuticuses Name any five synthetic drugs with therapeuticuses. IIMT COLLEGE OF PHARMACY
