Why You Should Consider Coldmix Asphalt Repair For Your Pavement Coldmix asphalt repair is an excellent option if you’re considering using asphalt to repair cracks and other pavement defects, or if you have areas in your pavement that are experiencing general wear and tear over time. By repairing these problems before they become bigger issues, you can extend the useful life of your pavement and save money on expensive repairs down the road. If you’re ready to learn more about coldmix asphalt repair, keep reading! What Is Coldmix? Coldmix asphalt repair is a mixture of finely ground-up rocks and sand that hardens like regular asphalt, with one key difference: it’s faster. It takes less than 24 hours to cure and firm up, unlike traditional patching methods which can take weeks to fully harden. Coldmix doesn’t use any petroleum products so it’s also an environmentally friendly option. If you live in a state where rock salt is being used on roads, you may be familiar with coldpatch as well - they are exactly what they sound like, cold patch jobs applied in states where snow and ice are more common. What Is The Correct Mix Ratio? With hot mix asphalt, you might have noticed that someone in charge of buying and selling asphalt is typically referred to as a purchaser. This doesn’t just show up once or twice, but it happens throughout every single industry that deals with buying and selling asphalt; they are called purchasers. So what’s going on here? Why are these people referred to as purchasers? There could be several reasons for why a company is called a purchaser, but in many cases there’s an easier way to understand things. With hot mix asphalt, there are two
main ingredients: gravel and bitumen. A purchaser is someone who buys those two ingredients from companies like ours. How do I Calculate? If you’re having trouble determining what size of ColdMix repair job you need, there are several factors to consider. The first is pavement thickness—which should be a number somewhere between 6 and 8 inches. Next, think about how heavily trafficked your roads are. Finally, take into account whether or not your current asphalt is in good shape. If it is, then a ColdMix repair might be enough to get you by; but if it’s old and worn down, then adding a full thickness new layer of asphalt will be necessary as well. Are there any special requirements for my mix design? No special requirements exist for your mix design, although you should pay attention to aggregate gradation and consistency. Make sure that all of your aggregate pieces are crushed as small as possible; stones with a larger surface area will take much longer to heal. Additionally, it’s important that all of your materials are thoroughly screened to ensure a consistent product. We highly recommend using our Coldmix Calculator® to make sure you’re making quality mixes every time! How long does it take to get my repair completed? Unless an emergency repair is required, it usually takes about 7–10 days to schedule a repair and another 2–4 days to complete. Repairs are completed during non-peak hours, Monday through Friday, from 7:00am – 5:00pm and require two (2) full lanes of traffic to be closed. It’s best to schedule repairs during off-peak hours when there are fewer vehicles on our roadways. Where do we start?: To begin a maintenance project, crews will first shut down one or two lanes at a time and clean any debris away from your pavement. What If I have Further Questions? With cold mix asphalt repair, there's no hard and fast rule about how much your pavement will cost. Some projects are more complicated than others, some projects require more asphalt (and thus higher costs), and other variables factor into your specific project. That said, an inspection can help you get a sense of what you're dealing with—which is why it's important to call an experienced cold mix asphalt repair company before signing on for any work. Whether you call or email us with questions, we'll do our best to answer them promptly. But if we don't have answers on hand, we'll find them for you!
