  1. WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A LAPAROSCOPIC HERNIA OPERATION AND EVERYTHING ABOUT POST-SURGERY CARE AT HOME The laparoscopic hernia operation is nothing but a procedure similar to other laparoscopic surgeries that involve the repair of hernia. As in other laparoscopic surgeries, the patient is given general anesthesia. A small incision is made at or below the navel. The abdomen is filled with air to get a clear view of internal organs. A thin device called a laparoscope is inserted into the targeted organ, and the procedure is carried further. However, laparoscopic surgery gives you a great extent of convenience. Still, there are many things that you need to think about while deciding whether to have it or not. Here are a few things you should expect while opting for laparoscopic hernia surgery and some tips for good post-surgery care at home. Keep reading till the end! What to expect from a laparoscopic hernia surgery? As already mentioned above, laparoscopic surgeries convey a greater extent of convenience. Thus most patients are allowed to go home on the same day of the surgery while their entire recovery time varies from one to two weeks. Patients can do general daily activities by the end of the first week to the second week, but they should wait to do heavy activities like exercise, weight lifting, etc. According to some studies, the good news is that patients experience less pain after laparoscopic hernia surgery than open surgery. Also, among a total of 100 surgeries done, the chances of a hernia coming back are just in 1 to 10 cases. Risks that come with laparoscopic hernia surgery Before your doctor prescribes surgery, he will recommend you get some tests done to find out any existing conditions or complications to avoid risks. Such conditions may include – - Presence of blood clots. - Regular habit of smoking. - History of consumption of heavy doses of aspirin. - Severe issues related to the urinary system and prostate gland. While these are some common conditions that are considered risky, some potential risks that come with laparoscopic hernia surgery are – - Risk of anesthesia. - Pain in the region of testicles or surrounding veins and cords. - Damage to potency in males. - Collection of fluid or blood in the scrotum, inguinal canal, or abdominal region. - Injury in bladder and difficulty while urinating. - Infection caused by the stitches involves itchiness, redness, or inflammation. Not to mention, you are going to feel it a lot. - Shower Depending upon the type and severity of your surgery and as suggested by the doctor, you can take a shower after 24-48 hours of the surgery. It is best if you do it as your doctor instructs you. - Avoid heavy activities Let your body heal and avoid doing heavy tasks and move your body swiftly. Again, take notes on what your doctor suggests regarding this because everybody is different, and the type of procedure can make a difference. - Say Yes to light activities Take a light walk to increase blood circulation and start doing light activities after 1 to 3 weeks of surgery. -A bland diet Take a bland diet. Low-fat food goes best when your body is weak and is in the healing phase. Also, drink lots of water.
