  1. When Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Necessary?

  2. Wisdom teeth removal is considered one of the most painful dental procedures - well, at least, until after the minor surgery since medications like sedatives, anaesthetics, and analgesics are used before and during the extraction process. As such, both dentists and patients carefully think through the decision for wisdom teeth extraction so as to determine that, indeed, its benefits outweigh the possible costs including side effects and complications.

  3. Wisdom Teeth Issues Before we discuss the situations wherein wisdom teeth removal is a must, let's first discuss what wisdom teeth are and what the possible issues are with them. Wisdom teeth are not actually teeth that gives a person wisdom, far from it, such that the old myth that wisdom teeth extraction will cause loss of self is untrue.

  4. Wisdom teeth are simply the third - and final - set of molars that appear during the late teens or early twenties among normal people. While these molars are a valuable asset in good oral health when these are properly aligned and healthy, these can also be liabilities otherwise - thus, the need for wisdom teeth removal.

  5. Wisdom teeth removal is then a must for patients whose wisdom teeth fall into one of these situations: Misalignment. Your wisdom teeth may be angled inward or outward in relation to your second molars or be positioned horizontally in relation to your jaw. Such misalignment causes your wisdom teeth to crowd or damage the surrounding teeth as well as the nerves and jawbone in the area.

  6. Impacted. Your wisdom teeth can also be impacted, which means that the teeth are enclosed by soft tissues and/or by the jawbone. This usually happens in case of partial eruption of the teeth, which allows an opening for bacteria to come in and cause an infection. Your dentist is the best person who can determine your suitability for a wisdom teeth removal procedure.

  7. Keep in mind, too, that wisdom teeth removal is not something that can be done with a traditional albeit unsafe method of string-and-pull - your dentist will use medications to numb the area with anaesthetics, use modern equipment to extract the teeth, and then prescribe medications to prevent excessive bleeding and infections, among other steps.

  8. Signs of Need for Extraction When you experience these signs coming from your wisdom teeth and their surrounding area, then your suitability as a candidate for wisdom teeth removal increases. • Pain • Swelling • Damage or infection in the teeth or in the surrounding teeth • Swollen gum • Stiff and sore jaw • Bad taste in the mouth and/or bad breath

  9. And when you have these signs, then all the more reason to hurry to your dentist's clinic for wisdom teeth removal as soon as possible: • Tumour or cyst • Tooth decay • Gum disease around the impacted wisdom teeth

  10. Even when you have a fear of needles in particular and sitting on the dentist's chair in general, you will find that the modern wisdom teeth removal procedure is as safe, effective and virtually painless as can be. Find out whether sedation dentistry can apply in your case. You can, for example, ask your dentist for mild or moderate sedation administered in oral or inhalation or intravenous methods so that you will have less anxiety about it.
