  1. PLACE OF ECONOMICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACE OF ECONOMICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM CURRICULUM At Secondary Stage, students have curious minds. Thus the most important aims of education is to satisfy their curiosity. It is also desirable to light a new flame of knowledge among the students at this stage. The path of their life will get brightened with this flame and they will get success in future. This flame will also fill the young students with zeal for life. Up to the 10th level the aim of education is to provide general education about different subjects. To provide basic knowledge of Economics, it is essential to include it in IX class as a part of social studies. If we introduce it as a separate subject in IX and X level, it will increase the burden of students as well as the school. It is introduced as a separate subject at the higher secondary level. It has an important place due to following reasons: 1. Self Reliance and Self Dependenc Self Reliance and Self Dependence: with confidence, if he is self reliant and self dependent. Economics provides knowledge about the industries, trades, agriculture and other means of production. It also provides the knowledge about different vocations. Such knowledge enables an individual to know about various means of earning his livelihood. e: A student will be able to face the life 2. Develops a practical outlook for life: Develops a practical outlook for life: Any one who studies economics automatically acquires a practical outlook for life. The students become broad minded and develop an economic attitude. This will help them to become a good citizen. It makes him conscious of the various intricacies of economic life. The qualities desirable in a democratic citizen as tolerance, sympathy, humanity etc. can be developed with the help of economics. 3. Develops Original Thinking: Develops Original Thinking: The student who has acquired some knowledge of economics, tries to solve various problems in an independent manner. It will help in developing the original thinking of the pupils and also help in solving various social and individual problems.

Problems Knowledge about Different Vocations: Problems Knowledge about Different Vocations: The teaching of economics helps the pupils to acquire knowledge about the production, distribution, utility, cottage industries, small scale industries, large scale industries etc. it tells about the various ways and means of trade. They also acquire knowledge about different factors of production as land, labour, capital and entrepreneur. They can utilize this knowledge in this future. 5. Help in solving the problems Help in solving the problems of Agricultural Economy: agriculturist country; it’s about 70% population is engaged in agriculture. Our land is very fertile but due to some reasons we are not getting self- sufficiency in this field. Students will get the knowledge about the factors responsible for the less production in agriculture sector. With the help of economics they will learn the art of balancing the budget, importance of budget, different sources of earning, requirements for establishing an industry and living in a happy manner. Thus it will be possible for them to solve the complex economic problems of their life in the future. 7. Knowledge of the other countries: Knowledge of the other countries: The study of economics provides the knowledge of one’s own country. It also provides the knowledge about economic situations of other countries as well with the study of foreign trade, foreign exchange, imports, exports etc. This will helpful in acquiring the knowledge of the structure of a country which determines the way of living, pattern of behaviour, civilization and culture etc. He can compare the economic structure of his own country with the other countries. 8. Balanced Pattern of life: Balanced Pattern of life: The students get knowledge about the economic life, its development, economy of a country etc. The scope of Economics is very wide. They know about the interdependence of social development, cultural, political and economic development of a country with in itself as well as within the whole world. This will help in making the general pattern of life more balanced.

If all the citizens of a country are able to plan their economic life scientifically, there shall be stable foundation to the country. For this reason economics has been given an important place in the curriculum. Now days, it is very necessary that every citizen should have knowledge about the economic structure and conditions of their country as well as of the whole world, so that he may be able to play the role as a responsible citizen.
