Analysis of a Music Video Beautiful Trauma- P!nk Gina Hamer
The first shot in the music video is a close up of Pink wearing a sleeping mask that says "mrs" on it. This is already a hint at her gender in the marriage defining her role, even down to what eye mask she wears to bed. We later see her husband (Channing Tatum) wear an identical one branded "Mr"
Here, we see Pink holding Channing, while the editing goes into a heart cut-out wipe that is often seen in vintage family tv shows from the 50's. This was used to define the couple as being in the "perfect marriage".
Next, we have a shot of Pink ironing, that zooms out to show Channing reading a newspaper while lazing around. This is used to show the audience how they are pigeonholed into stereotypical roles in the house. Also- note the dress style and the plastic on the furniture, it is all very sweet and clean, there is no room for mess or true fun, and the characters may feel trapped in the scene.
A shot of Channing reading his magazine, impressed by a rather "kinky" looking lingere advert. He holds it up to his wife, comparing her to the lady in the magazine. In the depth of field, Pink had burned a hole in Channing's shirt, showing that the role of housewife is not exactly for her.
A close up of Pink's pill collection. She takes each one, adding to her glee. These could be some sort of "happy pill", such as medication to help with clinical depression. This further demonstrated her unhappiness in her role as housewife.
In this shot, Pink has c=aught her husband trying on clothes from her wardrobe. This is where the playing around with gender stereotypes comes in. Despite Channing hiding away, Pink is delighted and accepts it. She then helps him apply lipstick in the mirror.
In this shot, the gender roles of the pair have reversed totally. Channing wears pastel colours on the and sequin beads on the dress, while Pink wears a fedora and a dark coloured suit. Channing adjusts her tie, demonstrating a new bond in the relationship.
In this mid-shot, the pair are at a happy phase in the relationship. The rich blue colour pallete and diamonds suggest something more glamourous than previous set-ups. The two are drinking for enjoyment, as made clear by their smiles
This shot is a complete contrast. It is edited in along with the previous set up to make the contrast clear. Here, the drink and blue shade tell us a different story: One of a depressed and trapped housewife. This is furthered by the above-shot of Pink in an empty bathtub.
Click to add text Pink and another woman wear similar outfits to the ones that Channing fantasised about in an earlier shot. The atmosphere is more sexual due to the red and blue mood lighting. The outfits are bondage inspired and suggest dominance, which goes against gender streotyoes, while also sexulisising the women who wear them, which is ver conventional for music videos.
Here, we reverse to the original set-up. This shot, taken from above, now shows channing wearing the "mrs" eye-mask, and Pink wearing the "mr" eye-mask. This completes the music video with a total switch from the begging. It confirms the status of their less conventional gender roles.
