  1. 3 Designs Of High  Performance Exhaust  Mufflers Basically,  mufflers  serve  3  purposes:  absorption  and  dissipation; exhausting combustion gases; and conserving  the engine’s power. The design of a muffler matter more  than the material that makes it.

  2. Although  there  are  modern  terms  associated  with  performance exhaust systems for cars e.g. multiple baffle,  turbo,  and  bullet,  they  all  fall  under  3  categories  described in this guide. Reactive Mufflers Also known as restrictive mufflers, these exhaust systems  reduce  the  noises  that  an  engine  produces.  They  use  technical  chambers  which  have  perforated  tubes  that  separate  and  nullify  particular  tones.  Most  reactive  mufflers have very small openings that do excellent work in  cancelling  noises  but  their  scavenging  abilities  are  low.  Their downside is that they can cause back pressure and  they are therefore made for small diameter exhaust systems.

  3. Absorptive Mufflers The design of these mufflers causes an interaction of the  sound  with  the  packing  materials.  The  sounds  are  converted  to  heat  energy  through  friction  hence  the  sound  absorption  ability  of  the  packing  materials  determine quality. These mufflers became popular during  the late 50s and even today are still common with car  owners who like tantalizing exhaust sounds. Combination Mufflers This  is  an  integration  of  the  reactive and absorptive designs.  Reactive mufflers produce very  low  exhaust  absorptive designs may produce  undesirable  sound  frequencies  and drone. tones  while  An  assimilation  of  the  two  designs  work  well  so  that  deeper tones are generated through absorption and drone is  eliminated by the reflection feature.

  4. This integrated design applies the principle of broad band This integrated design applies the principle of broad band  noise cancellation. The sound waves diverge to the exterior  core of the muffler and become cancelled. The remaining  waves are absorbed in the exterior thermal barrier which  dissipates radiant heat energy. Technically, performance truck exhaust mufflers do not give  the  engine  extra  power  when  installed  but  they  can  maintain  its  power  hence  improving  the  efficacy  of  the  whole system. Adding a muffler to a car also minimizes  wear and tear of the engine elements through reduction of  temperatures and enhancing the flow of exhaust gases.
