  2. There are many activities that your senior may enjoy doing. Keeping them active is a great way to help stop dementia, boost moods and increase the quality of life. If you need some ideas for your senior, then consider these suggestions given by in-home caregivers from home care.

  3. 1. Go Out to Eat Many seniors really enjoy going out to eat. It does not need to be somewhere special as many will enjoy a great hamburger or a fresh salad.

  4. 2. Visit the Local Senior Citizen’s Center Most communities have an active senior citizen’s center. This is a great place for the seniors to make new friends. These centers often offer fun games and nutritious meals that seniors can get enrolled into without worrying about the transportation as they can always hire a compassionate respite caregiver to help them out..

  5. 3. Play Board Games Even seniors who do not get around well, enjoy playing board games. Bingo, checkers, tick-tac-toe and dominoes are all games seniors enjoy with family members especially grandchildren.

  6. 4. Go Window Shopping Many seniors feel that they are stuck at home for long hours. Therefore, many love to go shopping even if they do not need anything from the store.

  7. 5. Community Service There are many non-profits that can benefit from a seniors help. Some even have positions that seniors can do from home like answering phones and folding newsletters..

  8. 6. Dance Many seniors love to dance even if it is just around their living rooms. The great news is that seniors who dance on a regular basis usually sport better cardiovascular health.

  9. 7. Visit Friends Seniors love staying up with the latest gossip from their friends. Encourage them to do so by providing a cell phone or teach them to use the computer.

  10. 8. Listen to Music Musical styles have definitely changed over a senior’s life. Provide them opportunity to listen to their favorite style and watch their moods brighten almost immediately.

  11. 9. Doing Chores While you may be able to do a chore faster or better than the senior, encourage them to help with tasks around the house. This allows them to feel independent and worthwhile.

  12. 10. Do a Craft Crafts are a wonderful way to help a senior fill long empty days. Many crafts can be done with recycled supplies or choose those that cost very little.

  13. 11. Play an Instrument If the senior has played a musical instrument in the past, then encourage them to start playing again. If they have never played, then consider instruments such as kazoos that can be easily learned.

  14. 12. Travel While the pace may need to be slower, many seniors enjoy traveling. This is especially true if they get to go spend a few days with their grandchildren.

  15. 13. Watch Movies Seniors often take pleasure in watching movies. Although, their favorites are often movies from the past, they many enjoy watching new movies with wholesome family themes.

  16. 14. Read While seniors were working and raising their families, many seniors did not have time to read. Take the senior to the library and help them pick out a book or two to read. If their eyesight is failing, do not forget audio books.

  17. 15. Go for a Walk Even a walk to the end of the drive can brighten senior’s spirits. If mobility is an issue, then consider using a wheelchair for a stroll around the block.

  18. 16. Exercise Encouraging your loved one to exercise often pays huge dividends. They may discover they really like to exercise while they are increasing their range of motion, flexibility and cardiovascular health.

  19. 17. Gardening Seniors often love gardening. The fresh vegetables that they raise can be used to supplement their food supplies while beautiful flowers can be used to brighten the home.

  20. 18. Grandchildren’s Activities While it may take some advance planning, most seniors really love being part of their grandchildren’s activities. Those who do not have grandchildren may still enjoy attending low-cost activities at local schools.

  21. 19. Electronic Games Do not save the Wii or Nintendo just for the children as many seniors enjoy these activities as well. There are even special games like bowling that are designed with this age group especially in mind.

  22. 20. Family Many seniors love time spent with family even if it is just a quiet night at home. Grab some old photos and start an evening of storytelling fun.
