  2. INTRODUCTION Heartworms in dogs are a fatal disease that can affect the pet's health, lungs, and blood vessels. It leads to heart failure, lung disease, or organ damage of the affected pet.

  4. Causes of Heartworm Disease in Dogs Transmission The microfilariae, heartworm larvae, are transmitted to new animals by mosquitoes. Adult worms live in blood vessels in the heart and lungs until they are ready to pupate.

  5. Heartworm Life Span An adult heartworm's life span is 3 to 5 years in a canine. Female worms produce microfilaria. Adult male heartworms average 4 to 6 inches long & females average 10 to 12 inches.

  6. Disease Cycle Affects blood vessels in the heart and lungs, leading to immune system damage. Blood vessels in the heart are also damaged due to dead worms. Long- term infection can cause reduced blood vessel flexibility.

  7. Bacterial Organism Wolbachia pipiens, a bacterial organism, causes disease damage and helps in heartworm reproduction. Vets require a comprehensive pet medical history as part of the treatment regimen.

  8. Severity The severity of heartworm infection depends on the number of heartworms. The infected dog's immune system, duration, and activity level are also crucial factors.
