Introduction Working on construction sites these days is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Studies show that 1 in 5 deaths, in the worker private industry, occurred in construction. That’s a lot. This is mainly due to how the construction industry works. The term “time is money” rings true here as workers want to complete the project in record time for bonuses. And when you’re in a hurry, you’re tempting fate and inviting a freak accident. The only way to counter this is by taking safety measures. An obvious one would be not overfilling a small skip for hire. It doesn’t matter if you’re an employer or an employee, you have to do your part in making sure your working environment is as safe as it can be. This is not only the correct ethical decision but a good economic one as well.
As a construction worker, you should realise the inherent dangers of your job before trying to set foot on a site. Perhaps the biggest threat to overall safety are workers who are unaware. These people are not educated on potential hazards and end up putting their and other workers’ lives at risk. Always being on high-alert is one way of preventing and avoiding accidents. To become knowledgeable about the risks and learn how to avoid them, read the HSE safety checklist. The construction manager is also responsible and needs to make sure that all of his/her workers are aware of potential disasters and are mindful of the safety measures that need to be taken. Otherwise said managers are failing at a crucial part of their job.
Construction workers need to be trained in safety measures before they begin any kind of work on the site. Ideally, they should train on the site so that they get used to their working environment. Videos and guidelines on specific training can be found on the internet but it would be better to attend training sessions so that you are up to date with the latest safety measures.
Workers should know what the day’s activities and procedures include so that they can anticipate all the things that could go wrong and figure out ways to avoid them. Equipping them with headsets or smartphones is a good idea as it will help you communicate faster in case of an emergency.
Enlist a Supervisor Hire a no-nonsense supervisor who will keep a watch over the workers and ensure that no one is breaking any rules and regulations set by the construction manager. This includes safety measures and procedures as well.
Don’t try to hide or cover-up an accident. It will make the whole construction industry look bad. Be transparent about any accidents that might occur on the site. This will help others take worker safety more seriously and in time can be the catalyst through which improved measures are placed.
There is no clear path to zero percent death rate but utilizing these methodologies will greatly help us be on our way towards a safer construction site.
