They are utilized in the automotive industry to the medical industry to produce a wide range of products. The longevity, flexibility, and performance of these products will depend on the types of compounds used and the type of treatment that was applied. Probably the three largest classifications of rubber compounds are silicone rubber compounds, unvulcanized rubber compounds, and natural rubber vulcanization. So what's the difference? Let's expand on each classification. Silicone Rubber Compound Silicone rubber is one of the most multi-functional elastomers in the market today. A silicone rubber compounding is comprised of a silicone polymer combined with a variety of fillers, curing agents, or additives to achieve specific performance characteristics. Some of the advantages of silicone rubber include: High temperature resistant- silicone can withstand high heat applications without losing flexibility. Excellent weather resistant- Silicone has great resistance to UV light, ozone, and aging meaning they can be used outdoors without degradation.

Applications for silicone rubber compoundrange from automotive gaskets and seals to medical tubing, kitchenware, and electrical insulation. Silicone elastomers have an extended service life and exhibit stability which is why they are mostly used in industries that need both performance and safety. Unvulcanized Rubber Compound Unvulcanized rubber compound is essentially raw rubber before vulcanization. It is soft, sticky, and does not possess any mechanical strength. However, this material is important in the rubber industry because it can be easily molded, extruded, and calendered into parts before the vulcanizing or curing process. The major characteristics of unvulcanized rubber are: Plasticity and workability – easy to form and process. Adhesive or bonding capabilities – used as bonding products. The "unvulcanized stage" of rubber that is then cured – the unvulcanized compound is the substrate from which strong and durable rubber parts are made. Unvulcanized rubber compounds are common in the tire industry, shoe industry, and conveyor belt material prior to vulcanization that achieves the final service performance. Natural Rubber and Vulcanization Vulcanization is the chemical process by which raw rubber transforms into a stronger, more elastic, and more durable, rubber material. Vulcanizing natural rubber means adding sulfur (and/or other curing agents) to natural rubber, along with heat and pressure, to form cross-links between polymer chains in order to provide a substantial improvement in mechanical and thermal properties The benefits of vulcanized natural rubber include: 1.Improved elongation and resilience. 2.Improved tensile strength and resistance to abrasive wear. 3.Improved heat, chemical, and wear resistance. This development revolutionized the rubber industry, resulting in large-scale and useful natural rubber products for demanding applications like automotive tires, industrial sealing materials, hoses, and items necessary for vibration mounting.
