The bacterium *Neisseria gonorrhoeae* is responsible for the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. This infection commonly affects warm, moist areas of the body, including the urethra, eyes, throat, vagina, anus, and female reproductive tract. Gonorrhea is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse. If a mother is infected, she can also pass the infection to her baby during delivery. Symptoms typically appear between two to fourteen days after exposure; however, some individuals may not exhibit any noticeable symptoms at all.
