PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
  • The physical appearance of children begins to change as they get older. He or she loses his or her body shape and begins to look like a small adult. The infants fast rate of growth begins to slow down during childhood. As the children begin to develop their balance becomes very good. This means that they can run, climb, and jump.
intellectual development

  • The development of the brain and mind is all part of intellectual development. You have 1 minute to brainstorm what you think intellectual development refers to!!

As the child’s intellectual development continues, he or she can begin to carry out a range of more complicated activities, such as:
  • READING
  • TABLE MANNERS
  • WRITING HIS OR HER NAME
  • UNDERSTANDING THE RULES OF TEAM GAMES.

The child begins to mix different skills to complete a complicated task.
  • For example, playing a team game like football requires a child to understand the rules-(intellectual development, to be able to kick the ball in the right direction-physical development, to play with team mates-social development-and to cope with negative or positive feelings about winning the match-emotional development.

Children learn how to do things by watching others. This is called modelling. It is often amusing to see a small child copying something his or her parents have said.
  • Can you identify any problems that children may come across if they are modelling or copying behaviour??. Please explain your answer.

  • Complete both activities on page 176. Use the photocopied material I have provided and your own knowledge to answer the questions. You can either complete this in your text books or on paper. If you take your text books home you must bring your books in every lesson.
