    1. Quality and Costs of Primary Care in Europe

    2. Background of the project Lack of evidence on European PC Lack of comparative research (between European countries) Lack of evidence on certain topics (e.g. equity) (Kringos et al, BMC HSR 2010; 10:65) Previous studies have been performed; e.g. the 1993 task profile study by Boerma et al “Europe as laboratory for comparative research and a pool of good practices” (Groenewegen)

    5. And beyond..

    7. Data sources EXISTING: OECD HCQI (avoidable hospitalisation) OECD Health Equity Project (equity) System of Health Accounts (costs) PHAMEU Database (national PC structure) 1993 Task Profile Study (local PC organisation + process quality) NEW: GP survey (local PC organisation + process quality) Patients survey (responsiveness; patient-perceived outcomes)

    8. Data sources EXISTING: OECD HCQI (avoidable hospitalisation) OECD Health Equity Project (equity) System of Health Accounts (costs) PHAMEU Database (national PC structure) 1993 Task Profile Study (local PC organisation + process quality) NEW: GP survey (local PC organisation + process quality) Patients survey (responsiveness; patient-perceived outcomes)

    9. Development of the questionnaires Based on a literature and Internet search for existing questionnaires These existing questionnaires were used to formulate new questions which can be used to compare PC systems Expert consultation What has not been researched in previous studies?

    10. The GP and Patient surveys

    15. What can you expect? During the coming months invitations will be sent to GPs (random sample) GPs are asked to fill in a questionnaires and have a fieldworker in their practice who invites 10 patients to fill in a questionnaire

    16. Examples of hypotheses Process quality of PC services is positively associated with patient evaluations of PC quality; The degree of the organisation of PC practices in combination with quality of the PC process is negatively associated with the incidence of avoidable hospitalisations;

    17. Outcomes Evidence on the benefits of strong primary care systems Overview of quality of care in all these countries How does your country perform in comparison to other countries? How do patients experience care? Evidence on primary care related to aspects of equity

    18. Where can you find our results? Scientific articles written by project consortium and national coordinators Conference presentation EFPC 2012 Production of book Production policy brief Report on website

    19. Where are we now? Questionnaires have been developed and translated (incl. languages of the largest ethnic minority groups) Ethical approval has been obtained in largest part of the countries National coordinators will send out invitations to you…
