  1. Dipole-related Technology DevelopmentPeter Wanderer, BNLLARP Annual MeetingOctober 19-21, 2004

  2. Assemble existing LBL subcoils in open midplane dipole configuration • Analysis: 2D (and 3D?) forces and fields versus size of midplane gap • Compare to more complete designs • Use LBL models of subcoils? (ProE used in both places) Is this actually a shortcut? • Instrumentation: Use printed circuit strain gauges and/or voltage taps now in subscale coils?

  3. open midplane fixture • Design fixture at BNL • Iterate with LBL (e.g., tolerances) • Plan for > 1 test per fixture • Begin manufacture in FY05 • Need FY06 funds to complete it, if FY05 holdbacks stay in place. • Understand interaction with design of a model “separation dipole”

  4. Base program topics • Complete 12 T dipole for background field • 45 turn coil • React and wind studies – • strain sensitivity of reacted cable (10-turn coils) • stability of cable with high interstrand resistivity (short sample tests and 10-turn coils) • Cable test facility – • improvements to short sample fixture • Vacuum impregnation – • small-scale studies

  5. Tasks for the near term • Apply “explore the limits of the technologies” to FY05 and work on separation dipoles with available resources • Hardware deliverable important • Make agreements for collaborative work • Develop “resource-loaded schedule” • Milestones + budgets = task sheets “task sheets”
