Background • In 2005 the HEA emphasised the need for pedagogical research (PedR). • Responsding, the UK Centre for Materials Education (UKCME) established an annual research programme • The 3rd UKCME research project (2008) focussed on the work of Bradford College, specifically its FD in Metallurgy and Materials.

  4. Background • Bradford College - one of the largest FE colleges in England • Largest provider of HE in the FE sector • Only TDA contract outside the HE sector. • Offers over 100 different HE courses, of which around 20 are FDs • (with a further 8-10 under development)

  5. Metallurgy & Materials • Aimed at the P/t students , who study either by attending College or by any of a combination of: • Flexible • Distance • eLearning • Use APL/APEL, and Individual Learning Programmes (ILPs), to establish learner needs: • building on existing qualifications and experience. • Key success factor - flexible study pattern and attendance.

  6. Impact of Fds on Studentsand Employers • Nat. Award in Engineering (Metallurgy) • Level 3 - with Cti, supporting Casting Industry. • Nat Cert in Manufacturing Eng. (Metallurgy) • Level 3 ( Eng Tech ) • FD in Metallurgy and Materials • LMU – Level 4/5 - accredited to IOM3 for Eng Tec & I.Eng / C.Eng. • B.Eng (Hons) in Metallurgy and Materials • LMU ( Top Up degree from Foundation Degree ) • to be accredited for I.Eng.

How do you get Employerand Student Engagement? • Give employers and students a curriculum and modes of study appropriate for them. • Link academic study to the world of work • Include the employer and develop role of the industrial mentor. • Link qualifications to three grades of Professional Engineer.

Employer Engagement atBradford College • Networking and Partnerships. • Money and Time. • UKCME – Supporting Change Programme (3 years) Teaching Grants , Kick Start B.Eng • FDF – Teaching Grant, supporting eLearning. • Bodycote eLearning - 3 year project aimed at developing ‘modules of training’ for the Heat Treatment Industry, based on industry’s needs and requirements.

Employer Engagement atBradford College • Mentors involved in developing and recording APL/APEL audits for Personal Development Planning modules, Identifying ILP, using ‘ learning contracts’; WBL assessment and feedback. • Work based learning: aimed at developing knowledge and skills required for work, by using the work place as a learning environment.

  10. Additionally • Development of: • Metallurgy and Materials Industrial Support Group (M & MISG ) • Using ‘ Blogs’ and web based e-Technology to • develop new and existing qualifications, academic modules, WBL modules and learning frameworks.
