Helpful Tips While Studying Abroad • Overseas education brings with it loads of new experiences and insights. It opens up a whole new and brave world for us. Know Your Environment • Times have changed. With increasing crime rates around the world, keeping a close observation of your surrounding environment is an absolute must. Trying out different routes during daytime and leisure hours will give you the confidence to find ways to your room in more than one way.
Don’t Stand Out : Blend In • While studying abroad, it’s good to blend in with the culture of that country. There are some serious advantages to it. First, you will be accepted more easily by the community out there, and second, you will prevent yourself from a vulnerable situation like cheating and criminal activities.
Travel In Groups • Avoid going out alone, as much as you can. In case of going alone, to maintain a list of acquaintances you may during times of need. It is also good to inform someone whenever you go out alone.
Photocopy Important Document • Always maintain duplicate copies of your passport, aeroplane tickets, health insurance card, driver license, student ID to avoid landing in much trouble just in case you lose it or is stolen. Keep them all in a safe place other than that of original documents. Maintain a password protected file record of important information.
Mind Your Own Baggage • One should stay observant to the surroundings and environment. Nothing shall be taken for granted no matter what. You should take full responsibility of carrying your baggage before departure, on the journey, and on entering the foreign land. Don’t make friends with strangers at the airport or during travel around the city for the first time.
Avoid Impressionists & PUAs • Ever watched the movie, Taken, watch it. Foreign countries are not free of crimes. Far from it, in fact, crimes in there are even more structured and much better organized. Just to save on few bucks don’t make friends with any tom-dick-harry you may possibly meet on the streets. Chances are they are thugs out to steal something from you or may cause you to land in serious troubles. Avoid blind optimism thinking that you are different. You aren’t any less vulnerable to ill-acts than the rest. It’s better to be sceptical than being friendly to strangers.
Research The Area • Match and mark important places and landmarks on the local map. Keep one on the mobile and one as a hard copy. Maintain a record of bus number on specific routes, train timings and stations, and eating joints.
Something Just Are Best Kept Secret • Having police control room number on speed dial, some tools for defence, survival tactics are best kept closely under wraps. Keep your iron hands under velvet gloves. These few bare essentials are of lasting value during times of crisis.
Have Some Fun Too • Travel to landmark sites with friends and groups. Whichever country you will pursue your study from; it’s good to cover the most important destinations before the start of the course program, so you are able to have fun in your leisure time.
