  1. THERAPLAY® – A FIRST STEP TO MANAGING EMOTIONAL REGULATION BY LORIE WALTON CERTIFIED THERAPLAY® THERAPIST TRAINER SUPERVISOR (C.T.T/TS) OWNER OF FAMILY FIRST EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THERAPLAY® CANADA

  2. During times of stress, children's bodies produce hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can negatively impact their emotional regulation systems. When children face challenges, whether they be emotional, developmental, educational, medical, or familial, their emotional regulation systems may be impaired by the stress response that occurs. This can make it more difficult for them to maintain emotional regulation.

  3. As children's emotional systems, brain, and body systems are still developing, they often need help in calming down when they are upset. Without the support of an attentive adult, they may struggle to soothe themselves. If they are not properly comforted during times of distress, it can have a negative impact on their long-term emotional development Dysregulation in the brain's rhythm-keeping regions can also contribute to the development of psychiatric disorders, such as depression.

  4. When deciding on a therapeutic approach for a child, it is important to consider the following: 1. Is the child's emotional development at a level that is younger than their actual age? 2. Does the child have a strong attachment with a caregiver who is able to attune to their emotional needs and provide comfort and support to help regulate their brain and body systems? These factors can help determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

  5. Theraplay® is an evidence-based therapy that helps children learn to regulate their emotions through play and attuned interactions with a parent or caregiver. One of its benefits is its ability to teach caregivers how to use attuned, nurturing responses to help children who are struggling with emotional dysregulation learn new ways to cope with stress.
