Providing Donated Sperm to Infertility Clinics and Medical Research Centers Around the World, Fairfax Cryobank

Fairfax Cryobank provides donated sperm to infertility clinics and medical research centers around the world. Considered one of the most reliable sperm banks in the country, Fairfax Cryobank tests its donor semen for higher quality than most sperm banks. Additionally, it was the first sperm bank in the United States to screen for carriers of the cystic fibrosis gene, and today the company screens for a minimum of 86 mutations of the gene, while also screening for carriers of the Gaucher and Canavan genes among its Jewish donors. Lastly, the company also tests for a number of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, the herpes simplex virus, the human papillomavirus, human T-cell leukemia virus, cytomegalovirus, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia. In addition to this battery of tests for genetic and infectious diseases, Fairfax Cryobank also performs a preliminary evaluation of the donor as well as a sperm analysis. During the preliminary evaluation, the donor submits a family history to help further screen for disease risk, and submits personal information about education, academic testing, profession, and other general information that would be of interest to prospective parents. Applicants who pass the preliminary evaluation then submit sperm specimens that are analyzed for volume, count, pH, motility, viability, progression, white blood cells, and any abnormalities. Fairfax Cryobank has a minimum standard of 20 million total motile cells per milliliter. Fairfax Cryobank also offers other information about its donors. For an additional fee, prospective parents can receive other information from the donor, including childhood and adult photos, a silhouette, an audio interview, results from a Keirsey personality test, essays from the donor about his personal life, and the impressions of Fairfax Cryobank staff of the donor.
