Advantages of the Steel I-Beam A steel I-beam is made up of two horizontal planes, known as flanges, joined by a single vertical component. The cross-section of a steel I-beam is formed by the shape of the connection, which looks like an uppercase "I." The upper and lower flanges of an I beam have a slope, making them thin on the outside and thick on the interior, unlike H beams, which are similarly built. Although alternative steel specifications might be utilized for particular applications, such as framing, bridges, and some constructions, steel I-beams are typically made of structural steel. Steel I-beams utilize the least amount of material while still obtaining the desired shape and function to carry out their load-bearing duties because of their small cross-section area.
