  1. HOW DOES AN AUDIOLOGIST CONDUCT A HEARING TEST www.empowerhearing.com.au

  2. INTRODUCTION Comprehensive auditory assessments are done to evaluate your overall hearing health. These assessments involve otoscopy, tympanometry, speech recognition, and other diagnostic methods, which collectively provide a profile of your hearing capacity. Using the test data, a necessary treatment plan is created. At Empower Hearing in Canberra, we offer a client-focused and evidence-based hearing test process, performed by a university-qualified audiologist. This approach ensures every client receives accurate diagnostics and tailored solutions. Let’s understand how our auditory test supports your long-term hearing and improves your everyday communication.

  3. NAVIGATING THROUGH THE HEARING TEST PROCESS Empower Hearing does not simply offer a hearing test. We offer a thorough assessment, which helps you better understand your hearing, support your everyday communication, and protect your hearing health for the future. With us, you access a comprehensive auditory test and communication plan, available across Canberra. All our tests are done by university-qualified audiologists with 16+ years of experience in auditory health and clinical experience. 01

  4. WHAT HAPPENS DURING OUR HEARING TEST PROCESS? A diagnostic auditory test is one of the most accurate ways of understanding your auditory health. A qualified audiologist will conduct the first appointment, which lasts for about 60 minutes. The hearing test process includes: 1.Initial Discussion Your appointment starts with the audiologist discussing your hearing challenges in both noisy and quiet environments. This is a critical step that gives insights for the next steps of the hearing test process. The audiologist will enquire about your hearing challenges. These include symptoms like ringing (tinnitus), trouble in noisy places, or past noise exposure. Your general medical history will also be explored to guide the assessment. 02

  5. 2. Video Otoscopic Examination This is the point where we do a visual examination of your ear canals and eardrums to assess their health. A speculum is inserted into the ear canal, and using light and a magnifying glass, we visualise your eardrums. We check for earwax impaction, inflammation, or fluid. If the wax is too much for a thorough assessment, the audiologist performs an earwax removal or recommends one for a clearer view. This is to check for abnormalities in your ear. 3. Tympanometry The middle-ear testing is done to detect any issues of pressure or blockage. We measure how your eardrums move in response to air pressure changes and sound. During the test, a probe is inserted into the ear canal, and air pressure is varied while measuring the eardrum's movement. The information gathered is then displayed on a graph called a tympanogram, which the audiologist interprets to determine the health and function of the middle ear. Through this, we identify issues like fluid, perforations, Eustachian tube dysfunction, or any other middle-ear problem. 03

  6. 4. Pure Tone Audiometry At this stage, we measure hearing thresholds across a wide frequency range. You will be wearing headphones, and we will expose you to sounds of varying frequencies and intensities through them. You will be asked to tell us which sounds you hear. The audiologist maps the softest volume you can detect at each frequency, producing an audiogram. 5. Bone Conduction Testing The audiologist determines if you have any hearing loss or not, and the type of hearing loss (if you do have one). This test assesses how well sounds travel through the bones of your skull to the inner ear, bypassing the middle and outer ear. This helps determine whether any hearing loss is conductive (middle/outer ear) or sensorineural (inner ear/cochlea or auditory nerve), while also identifying an air‑bone gap if present. 04

  7. 6. Speech Audiometry Speech assessment is done to understand how well you understand words spoken at varying volumes. You will be presented with different words at varying volumes, which you will repeat to the audiologist. This helps us get insights into how you understand speech in realistic settings. 7. Summary Now all the diagnostic tests are done. We will present you with your audiogram and explain what the findings mean. We will provide you with personalised advice, along with an optional letter of referral to a doctor. 05

  8. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HEARING LOSS IS DETECTED? If hearing loss is detected, your audiologist is responsible for helping you understand what kind of loss it is and what your best next steps are. Based on the outcome, here is what you can typically expect: 1. Temporary or Reversible If the hearing issue is caused by something temporary, like earwax or middle ear pressure, then an in-clinic microsuction or a referral to a GP is made. This is done to deal with the issue at hand before moving to any long-term solution. 06

  9. 2. Medical Concern If a larger issue is detected, like sudden loss, ear disease, or unusual asymmetry, we’ll provide a medical referral letter for your GP or ENT, with all relevant audiological data to support proper care. 3. Permanent Hearing Loss (Sensorineural) If we are dealing with such scenarios, then we’ll talk you through hearing aid options. The suggestions will be made according to your communication needs, lifestyle, and preferences, and offer brand-independent recommendations. Trial periods, warranty info, and follow-ups are all covered in this discussion. 07
