  1. 5 Ways To Build Emotional Skills for Children Practice deep breathing Teach your child to take calm, quiet breaths. You can perform this with them a few times while they're agitated, but encourage them to utilize it on their own as necessary. Take a break Let your child have a brief time out if they need to get themselves up. Make your child aware that this is a choice they can make before being sent there for misbehavior. Make a calm down kit Fill a box with items that will help your child relax. Coloring books and crayons, images that your child like, and relaxing music that engages their senses may help them control their emotions. Problem solve with your child If your child's emotions are causing them problems, collaborate to find a solution. Inquire about what would be beneficial to them. They might be able to come up with some solutions with your assistance. Get mood boosters Discuss with your child their favorite activities when they are happy, such as playing outside, reading a joke book, or singing their favorite songs. Motivate them to do one of these on a bad day to help them overcome their emotions. www.emotionalliteracyacademy.com
