  3. Android Introduction • Android is an operating system for mobile devices like smartphones (Touch Screen Devices that support Android OS) and tablets. • It is open source and based on Linux. Android was developed by the Open Handset Alliance, led by Google, and other companies. • Android offers a unified approach to application development for mobile devices which means developers need only develop for Android, and their applications should be able to run on different devices powered by Android.

History of Android • Android was first made public by Google in November 2007, but was released on 23 SEPTEMBER 2008 to be exact. • The HTC Dream, which had Android 1.0, was the first device to introduce the operating system to consumers. • Since then, Google has launched numerous Android versions with additional features and enhanced functionality.
