  1. Sinuses- Problems, Treatments, and the Importance of Surgeons! The hollow cavities present in the skull form a connected system. These are known as sinuses. The largest sinus cavities that we can find are about an inch across, but the other sinus cavities are much smaller. The maxillary sinuses are the massive sinuses found held by our cheekbones. The frontal sinuses are in the lower center of our forehead. The ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses are between our eyes and the bones behind our noses. The mucosa is a soft, thin pink layer around all of these sinuses, but these sinuses are generally empty other than the presence of a thin layer of mucus. Turbinates are the ridges present inside the nose and work to humidify and filter air, and the septum is a thin wall dividing the nose. The ‘middle meatus,’ as the doctors call it, is a drainage passage or channel that helps the sinuses to drain into the nose. Experts have no idea as to what is the significance of sinuses, but some say it’s for humidification purposes, and some say it helps our voices to get an extra enhancement. Sinus infection and its symptoms: Another name for sinus infection is sinusitis. It is nothing but the swelling of the tissues lined around the sinuses. When we live a healthy life, and our sinuses are not causing us any visible pain or challenges, then be assured that our sinuses get filled with air. However, as soon as the same sinuses get filled with liquid, they get infected because of the germs. There are reasons which can lead to a blocked sinus issue, and they are: ●Allergic rhinitis ●The common flu ●Nasal polyps ●A deviated septum

  2. ●Weak immunity So, if any of these issues arise, the chances of us getting a sinus infection are high. There are certain types of sinusitis depending on how long they linger and their symptoms: ●Acute sinusitis is an infection whose symptoms are runny nose, stuffy nose, and facial pain, and these infections might start randomly and last for around 2 to 4 weeks. ●The infection lasts for around 4 to 12 weeks and is known as Subacute sinusitis. ●Chronic sinusitis generally lingers for at least 12 weeks. ●Finally, recurring sinusitis is, as the name suggests, sinusitis that comes back frequently throughout the year. How do you diagnose and treat a sinus infection? As we can see, sinusitis shares its symptoms with the common cold and nasal infection. Hence, it is quite a hard job to figure out whether we have sinusitis or not. Our healthcare provider might ask us quite a few numbers of questions to understand our medical history and to figure out whether we have a chance of getting a sinus infection at all or not. A thorough checkup of our eyes, nose, and throat will ensure we have any swelling. On the basic level, there will be an endoscopy to get a better idea of any blockage or swelling. We might even get referred to an ENT specialist for further diagnosis. You can treat sinusitis in several ways, and it is done based on the severity of the infection. There is the use of antibiotics, Nasal saline irrigation, Decongestants, and more. Sinus surgeries are recommended for long-term help and relief from sinus issues. Every year around 250,000 to 300,000 people have sinus surgeries, which help them live a free and healthy life. Even though surgeries are considered the last resort to treat any issue, sometimes surgeries can be seen as a long-time relief giving measure rather than just another regular surgery. Sinuses might not cause severe health damage, but You feel irritated to carry on with this constant problem. Preliminary medications do not work for some people, and they might not have any other choice rather than going for surgery. Importance of a good sinus surgeon: The most common sinus surgery is endoscopic sinus surgery, and the success rate of this surgery is around 85 to 90 percent. Even though the chances of having a failed sinus surgery are rare, it might happen, and the consequences of a severely failed sinus surgery can get scary. There might be excessive blood loss to the point that the patient might need a blood transfusion. Therefore, having a good sinus surgeon is a must because we cannot afford to mess up the surgery at any cost.
