  1. What's the best way to care for removable dentures?

  2. About Removable Dentures Removable partial or complete dentures require continuous maintenance to keep them clean, free from stains and looking their best. To ensure the longevity of your dentures follow these 8 steps:

  3. 1. Remove and rinse dentures after eating. 2. Handle your dentures with care. 3. Clean your mouth after removing your dentures. 4. Brush your dentures at least daily. 5. Soak the dentures overnight. 6. Rinse dentures thoroughly before putting them back in. 7. Schedule regular dental checkups. 8. See your dentist if dentures become loose.

  4. 1. Remove and rinse dentures after eating Run water over your dentures to remove food debris and other loose particles. You may want to place a towel on the counter or in the sink or put some water in the sink so the dentures won't break if you drop them.

  5. 2. Handle your dentures carefully. Be sure you don't bend or damage the plastic or the clasps when cleaning.

  6. 3. Clean your mouth after removing your dentures. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush on natural teeth and gauze or a soft toothbrush to clean your tongue, cheeks and roof of your mouth (palate). If using denture adhesive, remove any remains from your gums.

  7. 4. Brush your dentures at least daily. Remove and gently clean your dentures daily. Soak and brush them with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive denture cleanser to remove food, plaque and other deposits. If you use denture adhesive, clean the grooves that fit against your gums to remove any remaining adhesive. Don't use denture cleansers inside your mouth.

  8. 5. Soak dentures overnight. Most types of dentures need to stay moist to keep their shape. Place the dentures in water or a mild denture-soaking solution overnight. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to use cleaning and soaking solutions. Check with your dentist/denturist how to properly store your dentures overnight.

  9. 6. Rinse dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth (especially if using a denture-soaking solution). Denture-soaking solutions can contain harmful chemicals that cause vomiting, pain or burns if swallowed. Make sure you rinse your dentures before putting them back in.

  10. 7. Schedule regular dental checkups. Our dentists will make recommendations on how often to visit the dental office for your denture maintenance. During the visit, the dentist will ensure that the denture fits well, to prevent slippage and discomfort. He will also check the inside of your mouth to make sure it's healthy.

  11. 8. See your dentist if you have a loose fit. See your dentist promptly if your dentures become loose. Loose dentures can cause irritation, sores and infection.
