Dr. Virendra Singh Types and Risk of Sleep Apnea - Dr Virendra Singh April 04, 2022 There are many diseases that might go unnoticed and therefore untreatable. One such common yet ignored disease is Sleep Apnea, a medical condition in which breathing temporarily ceases during sleep. Rightly so, Sleep Apnea is a serious sleep disorder where a person’s breathing repeatedly starts and stops. Symptoms of the disease make it less noticeable which include: loud snoring, headaches, lack of attentiveness while awake, not to forget insomnia. Although there are many causes of this disease most common being excessive weight and obesity. However, these are not the only causes, there are many possible ones. Types of Sleep Apnea Depending upon the type of Apnea, the disease is often related to lifestyle and neurological disorders. For example, obstructive Apnea is a functional disorder that occurs due to the narrowing of airways caused by the deposition of fatty tissues whereas Central sleep apnea is neurological. There are 3 common forms of Apnea: 1. Obstructive sleep apnea 2. Central sleep apnea 3. Complex sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea- It is the most common form of apnea where a person has difficulty breathing due to obstruction caused by throat muscles, narrowing the airways causing a person to wake up from sleep to fulfill the body’s requirement. This functional disorder can lead to snoring, choking, and even gasping. People who are at higher risk: obese persons, people with thicker necks, people with a history of such disorders, smokers, old aged people. Central sleep apnea- Unlike OSA, there is no snoring, as a person stops breathing while sleeping for some time. It is a neurological disorder where a person does not receive regular signals for breathing. Symptoms include lack of sleep and lack of concentration. It is more common in males than females. Complex sleep apnea- a person can have both OSA and CSA together. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of both, causing complexity in the symptoms and its identification too. People suffering can have poor sleep quality, headaches can feel fatigued throughout the day, to begin with.
