Suicidal Thought And Attempt In Kolkata Suicidal Thought And Attempt In Kolkata Myths Busted Myths Busted Suicide is one of society’s biggest problems. Each year the number of people who take their lives increases and many people like myself ask the question ‘Why?’
I believe the answer is attitude. The attitudes of people are the biggest contributor of suicide. Because of our attitudes, suicide is a taboo. When people have suicidal thought and attempt thoughtsin Kolkata, the taboo prevents us from opening up and talking about it. People are afraid of the reaction others will have, ridicule, shame, guilt or worse, not being taken seriously. When people considering suicide don’t get an opportunity to talk about it, they are more likely to do it. There are many myths out there that help perpetuate our attitudes on suicide. I believe that if we can “bust” some of the most common myths about suicide, this will help to evolve some of the current attitudes and potentially save many lives. Myth: People who commit suicide are selfish. Fact: People who suicide are under extreme pressure. There is an emotional pain they experience and they see the only way out is taking their own lives. Myth: People who commit suicide are taking the easy way out. Fact: Suicide is not an easy decision to make. It has often been thought of over a long period of time, in a lot of cases years, and carrying out suicide often takes overcoming fears about dying. Myth: People who commit suicide are crazy. Fact: While mental health is a big risk factor, the majority of people who suicide have no mental health issues. Suicide is a way out of emotional pain.
Myth: Once people decide on suicide, there is nothing anyone can do anyway. Fact: Suicide is mostly preventable. Suicide happens when people have run out of resources for coping. With counselling, people can find more resources and find some hope. Myth: People who talk about or make non-lethal attempts are only seeking attention. Fact: All suicide thoughts and acts are a cry for help. These should all be taken seriously and not dismissed. I know that it takes more than a blog to change the attitudes out there. In fact some attitudes will never change. What I do hope this blog on suicidal thought and attempt in Kolkata does is to start a conversation about suicide. If we can start a conversation, it will help to destroy the taboo surrounding suicide and maybe, help to preserve a few lives.
