  1. Bone Marrow Biopsy Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside bones (especially the hip and thigh bones) responsible for producing: •Red blood cells (carry oxygen) •White blood cells (fight infections) •Platelets (help in blood clotting) A bone marrow biopsy helps evaluate how well the marrow is functioning and whether any disease or abnormality is present in blood formation. It is a key diagnostic tool for blood cancers and other hematological conditions. When Does Dr. Amit Saklani Recommend This Procedure? Dr. Saklani may advise a biopsy if a patient shows: •Unexplained anemia or low blood counts •Persistent infections without clear cause •Suspicion of blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma •Abnormal white or red blood cell counts on lab tests •Monitoring response to cancer treatment •Evaluation of iron metabolism or vitamin deficiencies •To check if cancer has spread to the bone marrow from other organs Types of Bone Marrow Tests 1.Bone Marrow Aspiration oRemoves liquid marrow with a syringe. oExamines cell types and counts. 2.Bone Marrow Biopsy oRemoves a small solid core of bone marrow tissue. oProvides detailed architecture of marrow for diagnosis. Both are usually performed together for comprehensive evaluation. What Happens After the Sample is Taken? •The samples are sent to a pathology lab. •Specialists examine cell structures, abnormalities, and perform genetic/molecular testing. •Results take 5–10 days depending on the tests ordered. •Dr. Amit Saklani explains the findings clearly and plans the next steps accordingly.

  2. Side Effects or Complications Bone marrow biopsy is considered very safe, especially in expert hands like Dr. Saklani’s.
