  2. Types of Knee Replacement • Total Knee Replacement (TKR): This procedure involves replacing the entire knee joint with artificial implants, including the femur, tibia, and often the patella (kneecap). It's typically recommended for severe arthritis or significant joint damage. • Partial Knee Replacement (PKR): Also known as unicompartmental knee replacement, this surgery involves replacing only the damaged portion of the knee joint, leaving the healthy parts intact. It's suitable for patients with arthritis or joint damage limited to one compartment of the knee. • Revision Knee Replacement: This surgery is performed to replace a previous knee replacement implant that has worn out, become damaged, or loosened over time. It's a more complex procedure than initial knee replacement and may involve using specialized implants or bone grafts. These are different types of knee replacement surgeries .

  3. How the surgery is typically performed • Preparation: The patient is placed under anesthesia to ensure they don't feel any pain during the procedure. The surgical area is then cleaned and sterilized. • Incision: The surgeon makes an incision over the knee to access the damaged joint. • Reshaping of Bone: The damaged portions of the knee joint, including the ends of the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone), are removed and reshaped to accommodate the prosthetic components. • Implantation:The artificial implants, typically made of metal and plastic, are then secured into place on the prepared bone surfaces using specialized surgical cement or techniques. • Closure:After ensuring proper alignment and stability of the implants, the incision is closed with sutures or staples, and a sterile dressing is applied to the surgical site. • Recovery:Post-surgery, patients are monitored closely and may undergo physical therapy to regain strength, mobility, and function in the replaced knee joint.
