Adopting Service Dogs that were Disqualified for Being Too Nice| Doo Care

Now and then we hear all sort of stories on our Facebook, Insta posts about dogs that weren’t selected for service programs such as drug-sniffing, bomb-squad or police because of the lack of drive or nervousness or, the most adorable one, for behaving way too nicely. Yup, too much socialization can disqualify you if you’re a dog applying for law enforcement services.

  1. Adopting Service Dogs that were Disqualified for Being Too Nice Now and then we hear all sort of stories on our Facebook, Insta posts about dogs that weren’t selected for service programs such as drug-sniffing, bomb-squad or police because of the lack of drive or nervousness or, the most adorable one, for behaving way too nicely. Yup, too much socialization can disqualify you if you’re a dog applying for law enforcement services. And it's for everybody’s good. You see, just like humans, not all dogs are made for the life of catching criminals or sniffing out drugs. There are many who prefer cuddling humans over chasing them just like Gavel the pup. So, what happens to the ones who didn’t make it to the graduation? Luckily, they are up for adoption. They might not be suited for government jobs but that doesn’t mean they can’t be wonderful pets and companions. After all, being too friendly is what got them expelled in the first place. So, if you are looking for adopting an ex-service dog for your family, you are in the right place.

  2. There are many adoption agencies spread all over the US that specializes in dogs who never made it through the police training programs. These organizations, whether non-profit or part of the government, generally exercise their own rules when it comes to adoption though most of the rules are pretty basic ones. They normally go as follows.  Candidate must be 21 years of age.  Candidate, if possible, should be able to visit the training centre.  Candidate should have access to a fenced yard or some exercise area.  Candidate should commit to the humane care of the dog.  Candidate must not sell or give away the dog. (in case of inability to keep the dog, it must be returned to the training centre) Next comes the adoption process. Just like the adoption rules, the adoption process remains somewhat the same through these organizations.  Visit pet adoption sites such as PetFinder or PuppiesBehindBars and search for ex-service dogs.  Submit the application either online or through mail after selecting one.  After the application is reviewed and all your references checked and approved, you will be notified of the time and date for pickup.  Upon arrival, sign the adoption agreement and pay the fees (nominal amount) to complete the adoption process. Before You Go Please understand that the adoption agencies try their best to find the perfect match for you and your family. All the ex-service dogs up for adoption are current on their vaccines and already come spayed or neutered so you don’t have to worry on that end. Just give your new furry friend some time to adjust in the new environment and in turn, it will light up your whole life making it a living wonder for years to come.
