    Slide 1:Revealing the Online CE Buyer Good afternoon and Welcome everybody Thank you very much for taking time out of your busy schedules to learn about eBay My name is Patrick Jabal – I’m here today with about 20 of my colleagues from eBay and PayPal Most of us work up in San Jose, where eBay was founded a little over 9 years ago Since then eBay has grown to have more than 8,400 employees in office around the world My responsibility at eBay is to manage eBay’s Computers and Networking categories – a sliver of the overall eBay marketplace As a Category Director my job, and that of my team, is to make sure that eBay is meeting the needs of buyers and sellers of Computer and networking hardware and software I work with colleagues in teams organized just like mine, to manage a range of eBay categories from clothing to sporting goods to cars to Jewelry - we have several categories represented here today But enough about me. How many of you have bought or sold an item on eBay before? May I see a show of hands please? How many of you already sell on eBay for your business? To those of you who are already selling on eBay I say Welcome, and thank you, but you should know that today’s presentation is intended to provide an overview of eBay for people who don’t yet know much about eBay… if you’re already selling on eBay chances are you’ll be familiar with most of what we’re going to cover in the next hour or so How many of you wake up in the morning and go to bed at night thinking about new ways to grow your profits? Many hands… Prior to eBay I spent 12 years running 2 small businesses – one was a computer hardware company, and the other was a software company – and I can tell you that I spent a lot of time thinking about new ways to grow my businesses Before we take a look at the agenda together I’d like everybody to consider the following question: When was the last time you had a new idea to grow your business… a real new idea… not simply a new customer, or new product, or new service, but en entirely new way of doing things either instead of or in addition to what you’re already doing in your business? So hope is that for many of you on attending today, is for eBay to be your big new business growth idea for 2004 and 2005.     Slide 7:Electronics & Computers are eBay’s largest categories Volume CE is a big marketplace on eBay eBay is #1 in every single category This table should give you a sense of how your industry fits on eBay, eBay, look down this list Now note that just because your industry is lower on the list, or not yet on the list, doesn’t mean eBay is not a great opportunity – in fact, our smaller categories tend to be the fastest growing and represent some of the best opportunities for new sellers The history of category development on eBay is that long before a category is created on the site people will be buying and selling products in catch-all categories with names like “other”, “all”, or “everything else”. It is only when eBay notices activity on the site that we open up new categories To help translate these numbers on this page into a more understandable form, let me go over some statistics about each: A book sells on eBay every 2 seconds Each day 2,500 cell phones are sold Every minute on eBay 80 pieces of men’s & women’s clothing are sold a Laptop is sold every 45 seconds on eBay. A PDA is sold every 30 seconds on eBay. An MP3 player is sold every two minutes on eBay. In one month, over 600,000 gaming items are sold on eBay A kitchen small appliance is sold every minute on eBay A dog supply item is sold every 45 seconds on eBay 3 watches and 1 loose diamond sell every minute A diamond ring, a pair of diamond earrings and a piece of fine vintage jewelry sell every 2 minutes Over 1000 wireless networking items sell every day A camcorder is sold every two minutes on eBay. A photography related item is sold every 3 seconds on eBay A sports-related product sells every second on eBay One out of every three online sports merchandise purchases is made on eBay. More than 230 tractors or tractor parts are bought and sold every day I could go on and on… but the real clincher is that everything I just told you is what is happening on eBay’s US site… it doesn’t even take into account international eBay transactions So at this point you’re probably wondering how this is possible… why on earth are people coming to eBay in such large numbers and why are they so active on the site! how you can take advantage of eBay for your business In our jobs managing categories at eBay my colleagues and I spend a lot of time talking to and visiting sellers What we have observed first-hand is that while there are many similarities among the sellers and their reasons for selling on eBay, there are also many differences What most sellers have in common is that they are small businesses with anywhere from 1 to 100 employees, and that they are all looking to grow their businesses by acquiring new customers from among eBay’s 114 million registered users The differences between how each business takes advantage of eBay as a selling platform are really as different as the businesses themselves We find sellers who are selling products across the full product life cycle, that is, from brand new to used and very old products As it turns out that eBay brings a wide range of customers to the site – some who want the latest cutting edge products, and some that want used values or collectible products Let’s move from left to right along the chart on the top half of the slide New: starting on the left, some sellers, importers of leading edge cell phones for example, sell brand new products that aren’t yet widely available in the US In-season: others sellers are retailers able to get more for in-season products on eBay than in their stores End-of-life: other sellers, for example retailers, manufacturers and liquidators specialize in selling end-of-season merchandise on ebay Used: finally, many sellers refurbish used products or sell collectible products on eBay My point here is that whether you’re a manufacturer, dealer, distributor, retailer, liquidator, remarketer or even if you have an existing online store, eBay can be an additional sales channel for your business Now let’s look at the points made on the bottom half of the slide <Go through bullets> Whether you use eBay to increase sales of in-season products, get more for product returns, liquidate out of season stock or move items that aren’t selling well through other channels, eBay is a terrific new capability for your business to have Now that we’ve talked a little bit about the theory of eBay, and how it a variety of different businesses can use eBay to meet their needs, John is going to come back up to walk you through a few examples of businesses who have become successful sellers
