  1. THE TOP TEN THINGS TO DO IN BATON ROUGE Baton Rouge is the capitol of Louisiana, but often when people say they want to visit Louisiana New Orleans is the place that comes to mind. Yes, New Orleans has built itself up as the place to be in Louisiana, but Baton Rouge has a lot to offer that should be overlooked when visiting the state. Over the last ten years there have been a number of new events and venues that have popped up across the city. When visiting Baton Rouge there are a number of places most locals will tell you to visit but there are new places that even some of the locals may not have visited yet or may not have seen in a long time. After some research and comments from locals we have compiled a list of the top ten things to do in Baton Rouge. We will start with the normal things most locals would mention and that is visiting the Louisiana State Capital and the Old State Capitol. There are great stories behind the creation of both buildings which we will not get into here since that would disincentive you from visiting both building, but what we can say is this is a most see attraction. Another well-known venue is the USS Kiss which is right on the Mississippi River and has a number of activities to showcase the history of this ship and its importance to the country.

  2. Within the last ten years the downtown has grown from a place where you work and leave after five to an area where after hours it is the place to be. In fact, there is an event that takes place during the spring, summer and fall called Live After Five. The venue is City Hall Plaza and if you are into live music, activities, and a great place to spend time with your family, you need to try out this venue. There are many new restaurants, art galleries, hotels, and other hot spots for people of all ages downtown that did not exist ten years ago. For the sports enthusiast, attending a Southern or LSU football game is the place to be on Saturday night. Southern has the tradition of having the best band in the land where halftime of their games can be more of an event then the game. At LSU the tailgates are second to none and they have many attractions around the stadium that are most see, like Mike the Tiger (the team mascot). Kids have a brand-new venue called, the Knock Knock Children’s Museum. This is a place for kids to create, play and learn. There are 18 different learning zones designed to encourage exploration of different cognitive skills. So, while kids are playing, they are also learning and growing. In 2018, this facility was awarded for being the Louisiana Museum of the Year. In addition to the museum, the Baton Rouge Zoo is another venue for kids of all ages and is a place to see in the city. To recap these are the ten places our locals say you should visit while visiting Baton Rouge (in no particular order): Attend an LSU Game (see Mike the Tiger) Attend a Southern University Jaguar Game Louisiana State Capitol Louisiana Old State Capitol The Old Governor’s Mansion USS Kid Downtown Baton Rouge (City Hall Plaza/Live After Five events) Capital Park Museum Knock Knock Children’s Museum Baton Rouge Zoo There are just a few of the many events and venues you should visit but based on input from the locals you are in good hands if you follow this list.
