  1. How Long Will Microsoft Support Your Version of Office? Everything that exists has an expiry date. Well, so is the case for the Microsoft products, referred to as the product lifecycle. They begin with a product's release, ending when Microsoft no longer supports the product. They follow Fixed Policy Lifecycle Phases. A lifecycle provides consistent and predictable guidelines for support throughout a product's life. It helps customers manage their IT investments and environments while strategically planning for the future. For instance, the download Office Home and Student 2019 has the mainstream support as Oct 13, 2023, and the end of support as Oct 14, 2025. Generally, the lifecycle lasts about 10 years and is split between Mainstream Support and Extended Support. An exception is Office 2019, which has an Extended Support of only 2 years. Thinking what is the difference between these terms? Let's discuss the terminology associated with your Microsoft product's lifecycle. What is the Difference Between Mainstream vs. Extended Support? Microsoft is committed to providing products to its customers with improved security. They only remove software vulnerabilities during the development stage, but some may remain. Here, Microsoft owns the responsibility and is prepared to respond when they get discovered. And so, Microsoft advises customers to install the latest product releases, security updates, and service packs to remain as secure as possible. With that, it should also be kept in mind that a fixed lifecycle does not work for every product. You need to understand that a Fixed Lifecycle Policy applies to many commercial and some consumer products. Currently, it is available through retail purchase and/or volume licensing. It provides for the following: • Defined support and services at the time of product launch. • Mainstream support for a minimum of five years.

  2. • An additional period of Extended support for some products. Mainstream Support: Mainstream support is the first phase (typically for five years) of a product's lifecycle. It begins with the product released date and extends under the Fixed Policy for a while. It comes with: • Request to change product design and features • Paid support available • Support for Security updates • Incident support is available • Self-help support • Can request non-security updates Extended Support When applicable, the Extended Support follows Mainstream Support for products managed by the Fixed Policy. It follows after mainstream support for some time with reduced features. Its services include: • Security updates at no extra cost

  3. • Paid support programs are available • Do not accept requests for warranty support, design changes, or new features. • Non-security update not available • Complimentary support to request non-security fixes for select products Note: The duration of Service Pack Support is available for 12 months.
