France-Based Surgeons Operate on Indian Patients Using Made-in-India Robot Remote Patient Monitoring Digital Health Technology Medical Devices & Diagnostic According to the medical teams, the robotic arms were controlled remotely by surgeons in France without delay or disruption. India has enabled two successful remote surgeries across continents using its own surgical robot, marking a breakthrough in the global application of telesurgery. Surgeons operating from France have performed a gastric bypass and a cardiac ASD closure on patients based in Indore using the made-in-India SSI Mantra system.
The procedures were part of the Society of Robotic Surgery Conference held in Strasbourg, connecting France’s IRCAD headquarters with operation theatres at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences and the IRCAD National Centre in Indore. Both surgeries were completed in real time with no technical lag or complications reported. The SSI Mantra surgical robotic system, developed by SS Innovations International, has been approved by India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization for both telesurgery and remote surgical training. According to the medical teams, the robotic arms were controlled remotely by surgeons in France without delay or disruption. Dr Mohit Bhandari, President of IRCAD India, conducted the gastric bypass procedure in just over 44 minutes. “Performing a complex gastric bypass remotely, across continents, marks a transformative moment in surgical science. It is not just about technological capability, it is about bridging gaps in access to quality healthcare. The success of the SSI Mantra system proves that the future of safe, precise and inclusive surgery is here, and it is being shaped in India,” he said. The second surgery, an atrial septal defect closure, was performed by Dr Sudhir Srivastava, Chairman of SS Innovations, with cardiologists and anaesthesiologists supporting the procedure on-ground in Indore. While robotic-assisted surgeries have been conducted for over two decades, what distinguishes this event is the scale and distance involved. Executing complex procedures 10,000 kilometres apart in real time is a demanding test of both digital infrastructure and robotic precision.
SS Innovations reports that the SSI Mantra system has now been used in more than 5,000 surgeries across specialties, including 35 telesurgeries and 250 cardiac cases. No device-related complications have been reported. Robotic telesurgery remains rare on a global scale, especially in intercontinental settings. Its successful use in India may influence how future surgical expertise is distributed to geographies lacking in advanced care. Stay tuned for more such updates on Digital Health News
