  1. Septic system: an overview Do you know where the waters from shower or bath, laundry or dishes, or toilet flushes go? It ends up in one of the two places – an on-site septic system or a public sewer system. Septic and cisterns are quite common in rural locations: septic tanks to collect the waste water and cisterns for drinkable water. In that sense, cistern septic systems hold great importance. Leaving cisterns for later, let’s talk about on-site septic systems here: An on-site septic system is primarily recommended in rural locations where connectivity to a public sewer system is not available. Septic systems here consist of two parts: a septic tank and a drain field. A septic tank It can be a plastic or concrete container that remains underground and connected via drainpipe to a home or business. The size of the septic tank depends on the location and the occupants. It acts as a small, temporary holding and treatment tank for wastewater. The purpose It fills with wastewater, which gets separated into three layers – scum, bulk liquid and sludge. The sludge water remains on the bottom, and consists of heavy, insoluble material such as fecal waste and toilet paper. The scum at the top has fat, oils, and greases that float to the surface. The bulk liquid in the middle takes the most of the volume, and contains organic and inorganic materials that do not get settled to the bottom or float on the top. The septic tank is designed in a way that prevents the sludge and scum layers from leaving, while allowing the bulk layer to drain from the tank into the drain field via a plastic pipe. A drain field Also called a leach field, a drain field is an area outside of the building and has perforated pipes connected to aid in drainage.
