Starting in 1982, the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) project has been researching and tracking these systems for over 31 years with the goal of improving understanding of their effects on climate, weather, and society. Whatis El Nino? El Niño refers to the warming of sea surface temperature in the central-eastern Pacific; it's felt strongly in the tropical eastern Pacific with warmer than average weather. El Niño is an irregular event and happens on average every 5 years or so, typically lasting for 8-12 months. www.desertcart.ie

La Niña is one of the primary modes of climate variability on a global and regional scale, which consists of an intensified tropical rainfall pattern and dry conditions in the subtropics. The cooler than average sea surface temperature in the equatorial Pacific causes a disruption to normal atmospheric circulation. www.desertcart.ie
