Sexy Beast OPENING SEQUENCE
Introduction: • The sequence starts off with what seems like a point of view shot of the bright blue sky and sun as the voiceover of a man plays on background. It fastly switches to a birds eye view/wide shot of an old man sunbathing. • The introduction is very long allowing us to see the smallest details in the background, the bottles of beer next to him might suggest that he is hungover, taking impulsive decisions. The man is fully red meaning he stayed there for a while as he mumbles random words. This creates a very weird and uneasy tension due to the lack of context and background information provided.
It cuts to another close wide angle of the man which makes the audience feel weirded out due to the close shot of his body. We can now see more of the location he’s in as the background is to be seen. A Non diegetic sound ofenergetic music is played which contrasts with the lazy behaviour the man has. As he gets up, the camera is in deep focus which allows us to also see a small boy cleaning the pool in the distance which are to makes the audience wait and wonder due to, also, the long takes. • He starts speaking to him rudely, we can’t really focus on the scene due to his accent which Creates humor. WE see the hierarchical position between them two, He seems like an old rich man whom may or may not Had been involved in illegal work.
The man seems careless, relaxed, his character seems to be the jerk type, rude & rich. Moreover, the man is to be seen, from a wide and above angle still sunbathing next to the pool. The pool with the two hearts take the space of the shot leaving him in the corner, this may connote his loveless life as it transitions to a woman driving away. This could also be one of the reasons he’s so rude and careless, the loss of love created his douche miserable character, sunbathing away his sadness.
The wide angles allow us to see the location the scene happens, we see sandy hills in the background combining it with the extreme hot weather tells us he’s somewhere deserted, away from civilisation which adds to the illegal/gang work he might do. • The man, inactively, wakes up from his nap as the camera shots are still mainly focused on him, the closeness of the shots also allows the viewers to see the smallest details and facial expression he presents, his tired face and gestures also gives the mood and sense of boredom and distress.
It continues with him slowly and hardly getting up, at this point he seems lifeless. The title may have a relationship with the character which tells us that comedy may be one of the genre due to the difference between the old naked man and a “sexy beast”. Ending:
