  1. Fashion & lifestyle A brief long history of mens cravat ? March 29, 2023 A brief long history of mens cravat ? The cravat is a type of neckwear that originated in Croatia during the 17th century. It was initially worn as a scarf by Croatian soldiers who fought for the French against the Ottoman Empire. The word “cravat” is derived from the French word “cravate,” which in turn comes from the Croatian word “hrvatska,” meaning “Croatian.” The French saw the stylish neckwear on the Croatian soldiers and brought it back to France, where it quickly became popular among the aristocracy. In the 18th century, the cravat evolved into a more elaborate fashion accessory, with a variety of different styles and knots becoming popular. Men would wear them with formal dress, such as tailcoats, and they were often made from fine fabrics such as silk. During the 19th century, the popularity of the cravat waned as other styles of neckwear, such as the necktie, became more fashionable. However, the cravat continued to be worn by some men as a symbol of tradition and elegance.

  2. In the 20th century, the cravat experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly in the form of the ascot, which was worn by well-dressed men in the United States and Europe. Today, the cravat is still worn by some men on formal occasions, although it is more commonly seen as a fashion accessory worn with casual clothing.
