  1. Video Game Addiction in Teenagers The increasing prevalence of video gaming in teenagers may hinder the adolescent’s social, physical, and emotional development. This can lead to disruptions in daily functioning and declines in social bonds and academic performance. Seeing a child psychiatrist in such a scenario can be beneficial. Video games are specifically designed to hold the individual’s attention, while also providing a means of stimulating dopamine flow, the “happy transmitter” in the brain. As a result, adolescents may use gaming as a tool to avoid real-world issues, such as stress, depression, or anxiety. They may also associate video games with social connection, as many people are interacting together at that point. This liking for video gaming can turn into an addiction when a teenager becomes preoccupied with it instead of other hobbies or interests. As time passes, they might find it increasingly difficult to prioritize schoolwork over gaming and have angry and emotional responses when their gaming is disrupted. They will also begin spending significantly less time engaged with family and friends, and struggle to stick to timeouts for gaming.

  2. Psychiatrists for teens, or Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), can support adolescents in overcoming their addiction to video gaming by uncovering and focusing on the underlying causes, while reviewing the sociocultural, social, and academic situation for the adolescent. They can provide therapy and involve other family members in sessions to help reduce gaming. Psychiatrists can also use cognitive-behavioral therapy to assist adolescents when some persistent beliefs or thoughts drive continued gaming.
