2. Description I said the ‘sinner’s prayer’ when I was just 7 years old. I devoted my life to pursuing and serving God to the best of my ability. Church, ministry, missions, teaching, prayer, study, sacrifice and service all consumed my life for decades. What I did not realize was that the lie of separation had been sown into my understanding of God from the very beginning. That lie, that leaven, corrupted my understanding of God, myself, others and scripture.The lie of separation comes from the original deception in the garden. Adam and Eve were deceived into thinking God was holding something back from them. They believed the lie that they were separate from God and somehow, with the knowledge of good and evil, they could become like God. We do the same thing. We try to use the knowledge of good and evil - also know as Religion - to close this supposed gap between us and God. But the gap is a lie!As crazy as it may sound we have actually been deceived by the concept of repentance and forgiveness. For so many people the basic understanding of the God of Christianity is all about repentance and forgiveness. We are all sinners, but if we repent, this God will forgive us. But that is actually the very definition of an Angry, Distant God! That is the image of God that Adam and Eve created after they fell for the deception of separation.If I need forgiveness from God then He must be angry with me, right? If He is angry with me, He is obviously distant from me. And the elephant in the room of Christianity is that even after I repent and ask for forgiveness I keep falling prey to my weaknesses and sinning. Which means I need more repentance and forgiveness, which means God is angry and distant again. That sounds like the law of sin and death not the law of the Spirit of life in Christ. That sounds like angry, distant God.The leaven of separation brings with it the leaven of requirement. Under that deception we view God as one who demands love, He demands worship, He demands obedience, He demands belief. And in return we expect Him to provide something. We expect Him to provide blessings and health and protection and salvation. If I’ve done my part of loving God (or trying to anyway) then I expect God to do His part and provide all that other stuff. So basically our relationship with God is a transactional relationship. God requires me to love Him and in return He gives me protection. God requires me to worship Him and in return He gives me blessings. God requires me to believe and in return He gives me salvation.But scripture doesn’t reveal a God of repentance and forgiveness - it doesn’t reveal a transactional God - Jesus unveils that false image to reveal Grace and Immanuel, God with us! The God of repentance and forgiveness that we see in scripture is the false image from the deception in the garden. But the incarnation, death and resurrection of Jesus unveils that false image and reveals who God really is! He is Grace and Immanuel!The most amazing part about understanding Immanuel is that God has always been Immanuel - He has always been God with us! We don’t find God out there somewhere. We don’t look to the heavens to talk to Him. We don’t find Him in religion. We don’t usher in His presence from somewhere else. The Gospel of Jesus is the unveiling of Immanuel! It’s the revelation of Christ in you, the hope of glory. The whole earth is filled with the glory of God because the whole earth is filled with people. People created in His image and in His likeness. The Seed of the Father planted in all of humanity
