  2. Therole detailer contract of the examined steelworkdraughtsmanor the more closely. When withastructuresteel isplaced fabricator,andassumingthatthesteelwork detailerworksforthefabricator,theirdutiescan becategorisedasfollows. The first function is to prepare a list of steel materials from the layout drawings provided by theconsultingengineer,enablingthecontractor to reserve the items from stock or to place orderswithsteelmerchantsorsteelmills.

Thedetailers proceed with the preparation of the steel detailing drawings, providing an accurate representation of componentsofstructures,namely,beams,girders,, columns,bracings,stairways,platforms,rails,brackets,girts, purlins, etc., and where other structures such as bridges, towers,tanks,etc.,areinvolved,thesewillfollowbroadlythe samepattern. An experienced seniordetailermustcarefullysupervise drawings and carefully scrutinize them as a checker. It is essentialtocorrecttheerrorsatthisstage,asthecorrection oferrorsduringfabricationintheshoporduringerectionon sitewillbeinfinitelymoreexpensive.

  4. Draughtsmenshould becriticaloftheirownwork subconsciously acting as their own checker, to ensure that, to thebestoftheirability,theirdrawingsareerror-free. The detail drawings are sent to the fabrication shop, where workisputinhand,drawingthematerialfromstock,cutting it to exact length, drilling or punching the necessary holes and assembling the various parts by means of bolting or weldingtomakeupthecomponentsorsubassembliesready fortransporttosite. .

  5. Thedrawingoffice,whetherusingamanualsystemor computeraidedfacilities,mustnowproceedwiththe preparationoferectiondrawings,showingsteelframeworkin skeleton. These drawings should be checked by the senior detailerandendorsedbyaqualifiedstructuralengineer.The steel detailing services erector will refer to these drawings for the assembly of the structure on site. The position of each component is identified by a distinguishing erection mark.Inthefabricationshop,sucherectionmarksarehand- marked,paintedortaggedontothesteelcomponents.

  6. All drawings are updated to incorporate any revisions that haveoccurredduringtheprogressofthejobanda complete set of prints is handed to the engineer for filing.
