Dog Owners Must Know About Rabies Fear of the unknown has been a part of human history. It doesn't matter if it was thunder or lightning thousands of years ago or smallpox in this century. The lack of accurate information has led to myths, rumors, and irrational fear. Sadly, many people die from ignorance of safety precautions. This brief communication is from The Welfare of Stray Dogs. It attempts to explain the misunderstood and feared disease of rabies in an easy-to-understand format. This information would be greatly appreciated if you shared it with your friends. What is rabies? And what parts of the body does it affect. (Rabies Symptoms) The fatal viral disease Rabies affects the central nervous systems. It can cause brain inflammation, which can lead to death. How does rabies spread? (Rabies Vaccination Schedule) Infected saliva can enter broken skin to transmit the disease. It can be transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or through the licking of an existing cut or wound. It is not spread by air and aerosols are very rare. Although it can be transmitted by any warm-blooded animal (especially mammals), the main source of infection for humans is dogs.
Can it be curable? It is impossible to cure once the symptoms have developed. It can be prevented with prompt post-exposure treatment. How long is the disease lasting? It takes approximately 10 days to one year for the virus to incubate. It all depends on the location of the virus's entry into the body. The disease progresses faster if the bite is closer to the brain. The disease progresses quickly to death once clinical signs are present, usually within 5 to 7 working days. What signs are there? There are first vague signs, such as pain, nausea, fever or other non-specific symptoms. The second form of caning rabies is "furious" or "dumb". The "furious" form is marked by extreme restlessness, paralysis, salivation, abnormal behaviour, salivation, weakness in the back legs, and paralysis. This dog can be aggressive and hyperexcited, biting imaginary objects as well. Dogs in the "dumb" version have paralysis and lack of coordination. They want to hide in dark places. Both forms can cause changes in voice and inability of swallowing. Paralysis can lead to respiratory failure and coma, which can then cause death. Is a dog that shows these signs likely to have rabies? Not necessarily. If all signs are present, there is a strong chance of contracting rabies. But, there are other neurological disorders and conditions that can show multiple of these symptoms. Salivation can also be caused by infection, foreign bodies, ulcers, or poisoning. People often mistakenly interpret provocation to bite as rabid behavior. Experts should diagnose. How can rabies be diagnosed? It can be done either clinically or in a laboratory. The veterinarian will look at the following symptoms in order to diagnose the patient: the animal's history, habits, attitude towards its owner (in case of pets), and toward other dogs. After death, a laboratory examination of brain tissue takes place. Blood tests (i.e. Although ELISA can be performed on live animals, it is not a common procedure. Remember that a layperson is not qualified to diagnose Rabies and can cause severe harm if they try. Does it really seem that rabid dogs can't bear to see water? It is not a matter of water being difficult to drink due to paralysis and painful spasms. The dog's saliva is also affected by this condition. Are all stray dogs rabies-infected? No. They are however very vulnerable as many are not yet vaccinated.
Can pet dogs get rabies? Do they need to be vaccinated against rabies? Yes. Yes! Unvaccinated pets that roam unrestricted are at high risk. According to official sources, about half of all human rabies cases are due to pets biting. Every year, pets should be vaccinated. What do you think about cats? Every year, pet cats must also be vaccinated. Pet cats and dogs should not be allowed to roam free. What should I do if I'm bitten by or licked in the face by an animal suspected to have rabies? You must act quickly. (A) Wash the wound with soap and water for at least 10 seconds as soon as you can. It is vital to wash your wounds regularly. It can remove 94.4% virus particles. (b) Next, clean the wound with Dettol or Cetavelon, Betadine, or spirit. (c) Talk to your doctor about starting your post-exposure vaccination program. Take the entire course if an unknown dog attacks you unprovoked. Take at least three vaccinations if a dog is suspected of provoking an attack. The dog should be monitored for at least 14 days in either case. Dogs usually die within 10 to 12 days of the virus reaching their salivary glands. It is more likely that the animal will not have contracted rabies if he does not show any symptoms within this time. Is it possible for a pet that has not shown signs of rabies to transmit the disease? It is very unlikely that a dog with no symptoms will pass the disease. The incubation stage is the "carrying" phase. It starts at the moment the virus enters the body, stars multiplying and ends when it reaches the brain. This period is very rare and has only been observed in laboratory conditions. Are puppies able to get rabies through their mothers' milk or bore with it? It is not possible to get it from birth, but it could be passed on through mother's milk. The risk to a puppy of a rabid dogch is higher because their mother may lick and bite them. Will I get rabies if I'm bitten by a rabid dog? No. Human beings are not at high risk for rabies. Statistics show that rabies is fatal in about 1.5-20% of those who have been bitten orally by proven rabid animal bites. Please do not neglect your post-exposure care. You should never take the chance with rabies! How many Indians are killed by rabies?
It is estimated that the rate is between 1.7 and 3.3 per 10,00,000. This means that there are approximately 25,000 to 30,000 deaths annually. From 1992 to 1992, Mumbai saw about 50 deaths per year. Mass vaccination has been a major preventive measure in reducing the number of deaths. What do I do if I find a stray dog that is aggressive? The Municipal Dog Squad can be reached at (800) 662-8311 to have the dog taken away immediately. Do not touch or kill the dog. How do you quarantine a dog with rabies? Dogs that have been deemed to be at low risk for rabies can be quarantined at the owner's home. These dogs should be kept out of contact with other people or animals, either indoors or in a securely fenced yard. Only 1 person is allowed to take care of the dog.
