  1. Building Momentum: How to Align Leaders and Teams for Change A Practical Approach for Leading Through Change Change is a constant in business, but navigating it successfully requires more than just a good idea or a new strategy. It takes a resilient, engaged, and adaptable team—and that starts with leaders who are aligned, motivated, and skilled at bringing others along. Over the past 15 years, we have discovered the importance of two key factors essential for navigating change: alignment and momentum. As a result, we designed the Momentum Framework to help organizations better understand the process of building momentum during change initiatives. When leaders are on the same page, everything moves faster, and achievements stick around longer. What Is the MOMENTUM FRAMEWORK? The MOMENTUM FRAMEWORK highlights six key elements to prepare for and sustain organizational change. Each element helps strengthen leadership alignment, creating a solid foundation for lasting results. Think of it as a roadmap with a set of tools and diagnostics to help along the way: as leaders work through each element, their alignment grows stronger, making it easier to tackle the next challenge.

  2. One important thing to remember: aligning leaders isn’t something you do once and forget about. It’s an ongoing process of learning, adapting, and checking in regularly to make sure everyone’s still on track as circumstances shift. Why Alignment Matters When leaders are aligned, change happens faster and with less resistance. Teams have a shared purpose and can build real momentum. An environment is created where people are willing to roll up their sleeves, pull together, figure out new ways to get results—goals are met and sustained over time. The MOMENTUM FRAMEWORK provides a clear path for achieving this, helping leaders rally around the organization’s values, mission, and goals with support every step of the journey. The Six Elements of the MOMENTUM FRAMEWORK Clarity of Thinking: Getting clear about what needs to change, why it’s important, and what success looks like. Setting the context and

  3. communicating the story so everyone understands the vision and the “why” behind it. Impact on People: Taking time to consider how change will affect everyone involved. Planning for disruptions, gathering feedback, and making sure all voices are heard. Acknowledging concerns, adapting where needed, and identifying your early adopters and key influencers.

  4. Critical Skills: Figuring out what skills your team needs to succeed—both technical and interpersonal. Planning to develop these abilities, deciding who’s responsible, and setting clear milestones for when new skills should be in place. Personal Buy-In: Fostering an environment where people feel safe and motivated to jump on board. Offering flexible ways to learn and adapt,

  5. rewarding progress, and helping everyone see the benefits of embracing change. Team Cohesion: Encouraging teams to support one another through the process. Highlighting the value of working together and finding creative ways (like gamification) to make adoption fun and engaging. Tackling challenges as a group and celebrating shared victories.

  6. Behavior Reinforcement: Don’t let new habits fade away! Building in ways to measure and reinforce positive changes, integrating them into everyday routines, and supporting ongoing learning for everyone—including new hires. Is Your Team Ready for Change? As you consider each element of the MOMENTUM FRAMEWORK, ask yourself: ● Is the change you need clearly defined and well-communicated? ● Have you considered all stakeholders and their needs? ● Do you know which skills are missing, and is there a plan to develop them? ● Are individuals encouraged and supported to buy in? ● Is teamwork fostered and recognized? ● Are new behaviors being measured and reinforced over time? If you find uncertainty or gaps in your answers, that’s a sign to focus your efforts on those areas. By taking the time to really understand and address each

  7. element, you’ll build the momentum needed for sustainable change—and set your leaders and teams up for long-term success.
