Earlier this morning Patently Apple posted a report titled "A Chinese Government Official has clarified the VPN Crackdown that Apple is complying with." We're now discovering that Russia is cracking down on VPN's as well. According to CNN and other sources, President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that prohibits services, including virtual private networks (VPNs) that enable users to skirt government censorship efforts. The law will take effect on November 1.

Russia's President Putin follows China on Crackdown on VPN Services with new Law Kicking in November 1 Earlier this morning Patently Apple posted a report titled "A Chinese Government Official has clarified the VPN Crackdown that Apple is complying with." We're now discovering that Russia is cracking down on VPN's as well. According to CNN and other sources President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that prohibits services, including virtual private networks (VPNs) that enable users to skirt government censorship efforts. The law will take effect on November 1. The report further notes that "VPNs use encryption to disguise the source of internet traffic, allowing users to view websites that are banned in their home countries. Many popular VPN services cost around $10 a month. Russian internet regulator Roskomnadzor maintains a blacklist of thousands of websites. CNN did a report three years ago on the VPN service Hola which is one of the types of VPN services that Russia and China want to make illegal.
