Coronaviruses Prevention is better than Cure Whilst there is nothing new about the concept of prevention being better than cure- in  the wake of the new coronavirus emanating from China –it has high-lighted how  quickly a virus can spread. Whilst we are still learning about this latest novel  coronavirus, temporarily named 2019-nCoV, which was identified in China at the end of  2019, we can all try to prevent the future spread of more common viruses and diseases. What are coronaviruses? Coronaviruses were identified in the mid-60s and are known to infect humans and a  variety of animals (including birds and mammals). This family of viruses are known to  cause illness in humans ranging from the common cold to more severe or even fatal  diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute  Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)  Commercial Cleaning . Ways in which viruses are spread Many viruses and bacteria infect people only when they enter the nose or mouth. People  with diseases transmitted via the fecal-oral route can spread the disease to nearby  objects or food if they don’t wash their hands well after using the toilet.   Airborne illnesses spread through droplets in the air, which land on nearby  solutions objects. Touching an infected object transmits germs to your hands; touching your nose  or mouth with your unwashed hand infects you with the virus or bacteria. cleaning   Preventing spread of infection There are general principles you can follow to help prevent the spread of respiratory  viruses, including: ○ Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-  based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not  available. This is particularly important after taking public transport ○ Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands ○ Avoid close contact with people who are sick ○ If you feel unwell, stay at home, do not attend work or school ○ Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin. See Catch it,  Bin it, Kill it ○ Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home and work  environment ○ If you are worried about your symptoms, please call NHS 111. Do not go directly to  your GP or other healthcare environment To effectively wash your hands ○Wet your hands and wrists, then apply soap. ○Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds so the soap gets bubbly.

2. ○Remove rings or scrub under them. ○If your fingernails are dirty, use a scrub brush. ○Rinse your hands clean with running water. ○Dry your hands with a clean paper towel. ○ Do not touch the sink and faucets after you wash your hands. Use the paper  towel to turn off the faucet and open the door. ○ ○ Here’s an option for cleaning your hands ○ Use an alcohol-based hand cleaner (sanitizer). These products work if your  hands aren’t visibly soiled. ○Take about a dime-size dollop in your hand. ○Rub your hands together covering all hand surfaces front and back. ○Rub your hands until they’re dry.
