  1. Know Your Auto Glass Whenever we talk about auto glass, the first thing that comes to our mind is the windscreen. I never understand why we forget that car glass consists of windows and rear screen too. Some cars even contain glass panel roofs, which can be considered as an extension to the power window concept. Glasses are vulnerable and are prone to damage easily. When auto glasses get damaged, you have two options: you can either replace them or get them repaired. But before you make a decision on how to fix your damaged auto glass, it's important to understand it. There are two types of glasses used in making automobile glass. They are known as laminated glass and tempered glass. The windshield of a car is made up of laminated glass. The era of using laminated glass as the windshield of cars began in 1927. This was done because there were a lot of complaints of injuries due to ordinary glass. The automobile industry began using tempered glass by sticking together two pieces of glass with a thin, transparent plastic layer in between. This thin, transparent piece of plastic is called polyvinyl butyric (PVB). This plastic sheet and the two pieces of glass are infused together using high temperature and pressure. Using this process actually keeps the auto glass from shattering into pieces during the collision, thus saving people from glass injuries. Now, since the windscreen does not shatter, it actually provides protection to the occupants of the car. The vinyl layer on the windshield acts as a cushion in case the occupant of the car is not wearing the safety belt and is thrown on the windshield due to impact of a collision. Since it does not usually shatter, the broken pieces of glass adhere to the plastic lining, giving it a spider-web like appearance. Auto glass repair can be done depending upon the severity of the damage. In the case where the damage is extensive and complex, it is advisable to replace auto glass. The side windows and the back of the car are made up of tempered glass. Tempered glass is made up by using rapid heating and cooling methods. In the event of an accident, or when a car is hit by any object, the tempered glass does not shatter; instead, it breaks down into tons of pebble like tiny pieces. These tiny pieces are usually dull and are not sharp like ordinary glass. Due to the specific process of manufacturing, tempered glass is usually harder and stronger than the regular glass of the same thickness. Tempered glass generally does not break. But in case it does, there is no way to get it repaired. The only way out is to replace it.
